Solution: Ride your bicycle
or walk around town.
Why We Need It: Our
dependence on automobiles (and their dependence on oil) has drawn us
into wars, fragmented our communities, and denigrated our health, as
well as polluted our living environment.
Why You'll Like It: You'll be
more fit. You'll save a wallet-full of cash. You'll meet
new people. You'll have fun. You'll be actively and actually
making a difference!
In Depth:
The practicality of automobiles is coming to an end, especially in
urban areas. Gasoline prices are continuously on the rise,
fossil fuel reserves are dwindling, and large new oil fields are no
longer being discovered. Congestion in urban areas makes getting
anywhere by car a hassle, and stalled or stop-and-go traffic wastes
millions of gallons of fuel - and millions of dollars - every year.
The average American spends roughly 1.5 hours in an automobile every
day, even though most automobile trips are only around town.
Make a positive change and use your feet
or your bicycle to get around town. Walking short distances is a
great way to get some exercise while taking care of an errand or two.
Bicycling is over twice as efficient as walking, and you can cover
greater distances, carry larger loads, and do it all faster than on
foot. In crowded urban areas it is often faster to ride your
bicycle than to drive! Plus you get your exercise while you're
taking care of business - no time needed in the gym, and more time for
you to do whatever you'd like. To top it all off, bicycles need
no gasoline or other expensive fuel. A decent bicycle costs less
than 10-15 fill-ups at the gas pump, and it will be working fine long
after those fill-ups would have turned into 10-15 empty gas tanks.
Add it up: It's cheaper,
sustainable, more fun, often faster, and you get your daily exercise.
Top all that off with the fact that bicycles don't pollute our living
space - the environment - and you have a win/win solution. What
